BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Junior forward Tiffini Turpin netted the golden goal in the 95th minute, lifting UAB to a 1-0 win in overtime against Marshall on Friday night at West Campus Field. It marked Turpin's third goal of the season as UAB improved to 6-6-1 overall and 2-2-1 in Conference USA.
"I thought we played very well in the first half in terms of possession," head coach Paul Harbin said. "We had three clear chances that we should've finished. That was the biggest piece, just needing to finish. In the overtime period, we were able to string three or four passes together, and then Tiffini was there for the finish."
The Blazers and Thundering Herd (4-6-2, 2-3 C-USA) battled through a scoreless regulation before heading to overtime. The Blazers wasted little time attacking the Marshall defense and it paid off five minutes into the period. Sophomore midfielder Emily Sinovich slotted a ball to Turpin on the near post, and Turpin fired the ball into the opposite corner for her second game-winner of the season.
The game was a seesaw affair during regulation, with UAB controlling the first half while Marshall dominated the latter period. The Blazers held the Herd to one shot in the first period while taking eight. UAB finished with a 15-13 shot advantage and 6-3 corner advantage.
The Blazers nearly capitalized early in the first when Turpin got off a clear shot in the seventh minute. Turpin shook loose from her defender, but her shot hit the post.
UAB goalkeeper Kate Blankenship made three saves in the contest, while her counterpart for the Herd, Lexa Hughes, also made three saves.
UAB returns to the pitch on Sunday, hosting the East Carolina Pirates. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. at West Campus Field. Sunday's match will also feature a donation drive where people can donate any new or used sporting equipment or athletic apparel for any sport (men's, women's or kids). The drive is to benefit Vapor Ministries and anyone who donates an item will receive free admission to the game. It is also Youth Day and anyone under age 12 wearing a team jersey gets in for free.
