BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- With a personal-best time in her most recent race and the NCAA Regional approaching this weekend, UAB junior cross country runner Kristina Vaughn has been named the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week.
A biology major with a perfect 4.0 GPA, Vaughn was named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team as a sophomore in 2009. She is a two-time recipient of the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal and a two-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Vaughn lowered her personal-record 5K time by more than 11 seconds Nov. 1 at the Conference USA Championship in Tulsa, running to a 26th-place finish in 17:51. She helped UAB take fourth place as a team.
The Madison, Ala., native has been among the Blazers' top three finishers in three of the team's five races this fall, including a 19th-place finish out of 256 competitors at the Memphis Twilight Classic in September.
Vaughn and the UAB cross country team will run Saturday morning in the NCAA South Regional in Hoover, Ala. The event, hosted by Samford, will be contested at Veterans Park with the women's race beginning at 9:45 a.m. CT.
The UAB Student-Athlete of the Week is highlighted each Sunday night on Blazers All-Access, which airs locally at 11:35 p.m. on ABC 33/40.
