TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ----- It was a day of mixed results Saturday as the UAB men's tennis team competed at the Crimson Tide Fall Classic.
The Blazer doubles team of Tom Puetz and David Zimmerman won two matches Saturday to advance to the semifinal round in the Crimson draw.
Meanwhile, James Gardner, a transfer from West Alabama, moved into the final of his singles flight -- the Palmer draw -- with his 7-5, 7-6 victory over Boston College's Brandon Wong.
Puetz and Zimmerman, seeing their first doubles action Saturday after a first round bye a day earlier, defeated Adam Bernstein and Rodrigo Rappaccioli of Tulane, 8-4, in the round of 16. Later in the day, the Blazer duo knocked off the Alabama team of Jarryd Botha and Trey Walston, 8-6.
Puetz and Zimmerman will now take on Lucas Olivieri and Luka Somen of Virginia Tech in Sunday's semifinals.
UAB also had several other players on the courts Saturday. Senior John Hollimon, who had won twice Friday, fell in his semifinal match of the Shealy draw, losing to Notre Dame's Matt Dooley, 6-1, 6-2.
In addition to his doubles matches with Zimmerman, Puetz also played a pair of consolation round singles matches in the Musso draw. He cruised past Felipe Farias of Stillman, 6-0, 6-0, before falling in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-2, to Troy's Jamie Eccleton.
Junior Daniel Moser was also in consolation play Saturday. He defeated Boston College's Erik Kreutzer, 6-4, 6-0, in the Stabler draw but then was edged by Tulane's Rappaccioli, 6-7, 6-3, 10-8.
Danny Manlow won a consolation match in the Bryant draw before losing his next one. The All-Conference USA performer got past Troy's Anas Rouchdi but then dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Robert Hall of Louisville.
Blazer freshman Chris Helliar lost his opening round consolation match in the Stallings draw, falling to Chattanooga's Trent Cobb, 6-3, 6-2.
