BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team won five of the six singles matches Saturday afternoon to down Arkansas State, 5-2, indoors at the Samford Tennis Center.
After dropping two out of three doubles contests to lose the opening point, the Blazers (2-1) responded in strong fashion in singles play against the Red Wolves (1-3).
No. 1 singles player Evelien Strijker first dispatched of Elne Barnard 6-1, 6-2 to bring the Blazers even. Following Giorgia Romeo's first loss of the season at the No. 3 spot, Paula Alvarez pulled through at the No. 2 position for a three-set win over Arkansas State's Jenny Herrring to keep the contest even at 2-2.
Menanteau Moolman's first collegiate victory, a 6-2, 7-5 win over Menna Kamal at No. 4, put the Blazers on the brink of victory, and Jenny Cape notched the deciding point with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Andreea Georgescu at No. 6.
"I'm really proud of the comeback we were able to make in singles after losing the doubles point," UAB head coach Krissy Hall said. "I'm proud of the intensity and the fight our players showed throughout the match."
UAB's Brittany DeFelice closed out the match with a three-set win at the No. 5 spot to secure the Blazers' fifth point.
UAB originally had another match scheduled for this weekend against Kennesaw State, but it was postponed because of weather until a date to be determined later in the year. The Blazers now return to action Thursday with a trip to in-state foe Jacksonville State. Match time is slated for 1:30 p.m. CT.
