Blazer Tennis Team Falls To No. 58 Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. ----- UAB's Danny Manlow kept his unbeaten singles record intact in dual matches, accounting for the Blazer men's team's only point here Friday in a 6-1 loss to No. 58-ranked Mississippi State.
State (4-3) swept doubles play to take a 1-0 lead into singles action. George Coupland and Artem Ilyushin were 8-6 winners over UAB's Dan Cornei and Alex Emery at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2, Antonio Lastre and Daniel Sanchez downed Manlow and Daniel Moser by an 8-4 score. MSU's Louis Cant and Chris Doerr defeated Tom Puetz and David Zimmerman, 8-3, at the No. 3 spot.
In a battle at No. 1 singles, Manlow bested Coupland, ranked No. 85 nationally in singles, 6-2, 6-4, but that would be UAB's only highlight in the match as the Blazers saw their dual record fall to 4-3.
State won at the No. 2-6 positions, all in straight sets. Lastre provided the clinching fourth point with his win at No. 4 singles, beating UAB's Moser, 6-2, 6-3. Ilyushin was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 2 over Blazers' senior Cornei.
Cant edged past Zimmerman at No. 3 singles, 7-6, 7-5, handing the UAB freshman his first singles loss in dual matches.
At No. 5 singles, MSU's Max Gregor Smith outlasted Emery, 7-5, 7-5, while Sanchez defeated Puetz, 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 6 position.
UAB will have a quick turnaround for its next match as the Blazers are back in action Saturday when they play host to Jacksonville State. The match at the Lakeshore Tennis Center is slated to start at 2:00 p.m. CT.
