UAB Men's Tennis Team Defeats Southern Miss, 4-2

NEW ORLEANS ----- The UAB men's tennis team won the doubles point and then captured victories at three singles positions to defeat Southern Miss, 4-2, on the first day of the Conference USA Shootout here Thursday.
The Blazers improved their overall record to 11-6 and 2-0 in league play as they played the first of three matches this weekend against C-USA competition.
Sophomore Danny Manlow clinched the match for UAB with his win at No. 2 singles, defeating Diego Machuca, 7-5, 6-3.
The win was the sixth in a row for UAB over Southern Miss.
After the Blazers took a 1-0 lead on the strength of wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles, the Golden Eagles tied the match with a victory at No. 1 singles as Patricio Alvarado beat UAB's Alex Emery, 6-1, 6-2.
David Zimmerman gave the Blazers a 2-1 advantage with his 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over USM's Julien Roussel. Southern Miss (6-10) tied it at 2-2 as Jan Burmeister beat Daniel Moser at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-2.
UAB then closed out the match with straight-set wins at No. 6 by Dan Cornei and Manlow's clincher at No. 2 singles. Cornei bested USM's Strate Krstevski, 6-1, 6-4.
The Blazers' wins in doubles came at No. 2 as Tyrone Ewels and Moser teamed to defeat Machuca and Markus Wessinghage, 8-4, and at No. 3 as the duo of Zimmerman and Tom Puetz beat Alvarado and Krstevski, 8-4.
UAB's tandem at No. 1 doubles of Emery and Manlow held a 6-5 lead over Burmeister and Roussel when play was halted after the Blazers clinched the doubles point.
UAB will play its second match in the C-USA Shootout on Friday when the Blazers go against East Carolina at 9:00 a.m. CT on the Tulane University campus.
