BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB softball team received the program's first-ever NCAA Championship bid Sunday. The Blazers will travel to the Tuscaloosa Regional to be held Friday-Sunday, May 21-23 at the University of Alabama.
UAB will face Lipscomb at 3:30 p.m. CT Friday in its first game of the tournament that features a double-elimination format.
"This group of ladies sat down in the fall with their goals and making postseason play was one of them," UAB head coach Marla Townsend said. "I told them what type of commitment that would take and they have been dedicated and worked hard all season. Now their goal is a reality."
The Blazers will be one of four teams at the Tuscaloosa Regional that includes tournament No. 1 seed Alabama, Alcorn State, Lipscomb and UAB.
Friday's matchup will mark the third meeting between UAB (36-20) and Lipscomb (48-11) this season. The Blazers and the Lady Bisons played a doubleheader in Nashville, Tenn. on April 20. Lipscomb claimed the first game, 1-0, before UAB took the nightcap, 7-5.
"I'm very proud of this group of girls and especially excited that our two seniors, Martina Landrum and Cameron Skates, will be able to experience this," Townsend said. "The girls have worked hard all season and getting this opportunity to continue into postseason play means a lot. They are ready to practice tomorrow and head to Tuscaloosa this weekend."
With 36 wins to date, UAB has achieved the second-highest win total in program history. The Blazers' 15-win count in Conference USA games ties the school record for most league wins in a season. UAB spent the entire season ranked in the top 40 of the RPI and rose to a season high mark of No. 34.
