Lowman Recognized With C-USA Spirit of Service Award

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Sophomore softball player Mandy Lowman has been honored by Conference USA as UAB's Spirit of Service Award winner for Spring, 2010. Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced 12 recipients of the award Wednesday.
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the year, with Wednesday's honorees representing C-USA's spring sports: rowing, softball, tennis and outdoor track and field.
Lowman has been involved in several community service projects, volunteering at Ronald McDonald House serving meals to families with long-term patients at UAB or Children's Hospital. The Huntsville, Ala., product also played softball with special needs and disabled adults and children through Moody Miracle League, and participated in a free UAB softball clinic to educate children about the sport of softball.
The sophomore slugger was a leader on the field for the Blazers this season, receiving Louisville Slugger/NFCA Divison 1 All-Region First Team honors. She was also selected First-Team All-C-USA and ranked third in the league with 44 RBI. She also tied for fourth with 61 hits, and finished sixth in batting average (.343) and on-base percentage (.432). Her 44 RBI also set a new UAB single-season RBI record.
In the classroom, Lowman boasts a 4.0 GPA in her major of secondary education with a focus in mathematics. She was recognized with CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine All-District Second Team honors and was named a 2009 NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete. She was selected to C-USA's All-Academic Team and is a two-time C-USA Academic Medal recipient and Commissioner's Honor Roll selection.
