BOONE, N.C. -- The UAB cross country team opened its 2010 campaign with a third place finish Friday at the Mountaineer Open hosted by Appalachian State.
Senior Stephanie Gammon was the leading runner for the Blazers, placing 10th with a 5K time of 18:56.70. Finishing close-behind, junior Rhiannon Johns claimed 11th with a time of 18:57.33.
Ohio State claimed the meet's title with 17 points, while Southern Indiana was the runner-up with 57 points. UAB rounded out the top-three finishers with 75 points.
"We had a good run and accomplished many of the objectives we set out before the race," UAB head coach Blake Boldon said. "This is the first time that they have run in altitude, so it was a great effort and furthered our training."
Other top finishers for the Green and Gold included juniors Kristina Vaughn and Colleen Standridge. Vaughn crossed the line in 19:13.60 to claim 16th place, while Standridge finished 18th with a time of 19:14.16.
In her collegiate debut, freshman Emily Trotter clocked a time of 20:33.36 to finish 33rd.
"Emily helped us out a lot today," Boldon said. "She had a great run and really stepped up to be our fifth finisher. She is training at a high level right now."
The Blazers will be back in action next Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Memphis Twilight Classic. The women's 5K is slated for an 8:20 p.m. CT start.
