Men's Tennis Team Opens Fall Season At Southern Intercollegiate

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ------ The UAB tennis team will open its 2010 fall schedule this weekend when the Blazers travel to Athens, Ga. to participate in the 43rd Annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
The Southern Intercollegiate, held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex at the University of Georgia, is not only one of the top collegiate tournaments of the fall season, but it's also the nation's oldest fall college tennis tournament.
The tournament will run Friday-Monday, Sept. 24-27. There are 34 schools scheduled to be represented in the three singles brackets and two doubles draws.
"This will be a great test for our guys," said UAB head coach Derek Tarr, who will take five of his players to Athens for the event. "This is a premiere tournament that year-in, year-out, always draws outstanding teams and players. Our players are excited about the opportunity to play this type of competition. We need to get in some tough matches, and we need to keep improving."
Tarr, entering his 22nd season at the helm of the UAB program, will take one senior, a junior, a pair of sophomores and a freshman to the tournament.
Sophomore David Zimmerman is entered in the Division I singles flight while junior Daniel Moser and freshman Chris Helliar will compete in the Division II flight. Tom Puetz and Dan Cornei are slated to play in the Division III singles draw.
In doubles, Puetz and Zimmerman will team in the Division I flight with Helliar and Moser set to play in the Division II bracket.
Junior Danny Manlow, expected to be one of UAB's top players again this season, will miss the tournament due to injury.
