UAB Softball Picks Up Pair Of Victories Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB softball team picked up a pair of victories Saturday, defeating Stephen F. Austin 2-0, before downing Eastern Illinois 3-0 in the nightcap at the Magic City Classic at UAB Softball Field.
With the wins, UAB improves to 8-6, while Stephen F. Austin Falls to 2-12 and Eastern Illinois falls to 3-3.
The Blazers will conclude tournament play Sunday with a matchup against Alabama State at 2 p.m. at UAB Softball Field.
Game 2
UAB outhit Eastern Illinois, 6-3, in Saturday's finale. Center fielder Caley Walden went 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI to lead the Blazers at the plate.
Lauren Webster (4-2) went the distance for UAB in the circle, striking out six batters and holding the Panthers to just three hits.
In the first frame, Kayla Orr knocked a base hit to centerfield and advanced to second on the throw to plate Walden. The Green and Gold then loaded the bases before Eastern Illinois pitcher Amber May walked in UAB's second run of the inning.
The Blazers didn't score again until the seventh when Sallie Van Kirk reached on a bunt and rounded the diamond on a triple by Walden.
May (2-2) suffered the loss for the Panthers after giving up three earned runs on six hits.
Game 1
UAB overcame four miscues to defeat Stephen F. Austin, 2-0, Saturday afternoon.
Amber Torres made the start and tossed three innings, before Lannah Campbell (1-1) stepped in.
In the fourth, Orr reached on a Stephen F. Austin fielding error and advanced to second on the play. Orr moved to third on a Kate Armstrong single, then crossed the plate on a sacrifice bunt by Mandy Lowman to give UAB the 1-0 advantage.
Streetman came in to pitch for Campbell in the fifth inning with two runners on base. After walking Elizabeth Arana to load the bases, Streetman struck out Amber Price on a full count to escape the inning and eventually pick up the save.
UAB tacked on another run in the bottom of the inning after pinch runner Tiffany Smith crossed the plate on a single to leftfield by Orr.
