Men's Tennis Team Falls To Memphis, 4-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ----- The UAB men's tennis team dropped its final regular season road match Saturday, falling to Conference USA opponent Memphis at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
The Blazers (9-10, 3-2 C-USA) will close out their regular season Sunday with a home match against Middle Tennessee (9-12) at 1:30 p.m. CT at the Lakeshore Tennis Center. UAB will travel to Tulsa, Okla. next week for the Conference USA Championships, April 21-24.
As has been the case most of the season, the outcome of the doubles point went a long way to determining the final result of the match. The Tigers (15-9, 4-3 C-USA) won at the No. 1 and 3 doubles positions to take a 1-0 lead and momentum into singles play.
Jordan Smith and David Henry teamed at No. 1 to down UAB's duo of Tom Puetz and David Zimmerman, 8-5, while Leon Nasemann and John Taylor were 8-2 winners at the No. 3 spot over the Blazers' Lucas Dirube and Daniel Moser.
UAB salvaged a 9-8 (7-4) victory at No. 2 doubles as Chris Helliar and Danny Manlow defeated the Tigers David O'Hare and Joe Salisbury.
Memphis quickly made it 3-0 with 6-3, 6-3 wins at No. 3 and 2 singles by Nasemann and Salisbury over UAB's Puetz and Dirube, respectively.
The Blazers got on the board with a 6-1, 7-5 win by Helliar at No. 6 singles over Cedric De Zutter. The Tigers closed it out with their fourth team point with a three-set win at the No. 4 position by Johnny Grimal over UAB's Manlow, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.
The matches at No. 1 and No. 5 singles were halted once Memphis had clinched the match. Moser was leading at No. 5 over Taylor while Zimmerman was trailing the Tigers' O'Hare.
