BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A pair of UAB student-athletes are on the Capital One Academic All-District IV Women's At-Large Teams announced on Thursday.
Jenny Cape of the UAB women's tennis team earned first-team recognition for the second straight year, while Carolyn Cochran of the Blazer women's golf team was selected to the second team. The awards are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Cape carried a 4.0 GPA throughout her UAB career as a biology major. A native of Oakville, Ontario, Canada, she is a three-time member of the Conference USA All-Academic Team and a four-time recipient of the league's Academic Medal. She studied in the Science and Technology Honors Program at UAB and served as secretary of the Blazers' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
On the court, Cape finished the 2010-11 season with the best singles record on the UAB team at 24-12, including a 12-6 mark this spring in dual matches. She wrapped up her career with 67 career singles victories, including 39 in dual-match play.
Cape and all other first-team all-district selections will now be placed on the ballot for the Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Team, which will be voted upon later this month.
Cochran becomes the first UAB women's golfer to earn academic all-district accolades. She carried a 3.97 GPA as a biology major during her UAB tenure. A native of Daphne, Ala., she has earned UAB Presidential Honors eight times during her career and received the C-USA Academic Medal five times. Cochran also is a two-time C-USA All-Academic Team honoree.
Cochran posted four top-20 finishes during her senior season in 2010-11 and helped UAB post a school-record 36-hole total of 593 at the 2010 Great Smokies Intercollegiate. In 2009, Cochran earned medalist honors at the UAB Fall Beach Blast.
The women's at-large program includes student-athletes from the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo.
