BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The UAB women's soccer team topped Samford, 1-0, in the 2011 home opener at West Campus Field on Friday. Senior Pascale Pinard registered her second goal of the season for the Blazers.
In their first win of the season, the Blazers (1-2) owned a 17-5 shot advantage over the Bulldogs (1-2). UAB out-cornered Samford, 7-3.
"I thought we played well tonight. The first half we started really well and went down," head coach Harold Warren said. "The second half we played extremely well. As far as possession and creativity, the girls were great."
After the half, the Blazers took control of the game. UAB shifted the game tempo into high gear, taking 13 shots in the second half. Senior forward Tiffini Turpin led the Blazers in shots, putting three of her four on frame.
The lone goal of the match came in the second half in the 77th minute when Pinard fired a direct free kick from 20 yards out past Bulldog keeper Alyssa Whitehead and into the bottom right portion of the net.
"I think Pascale could be good for a goal a game if she takes the opportunities," Warren said. "She did what she was supposed to do on that shot. She shot low on a 6-foot plus keeper.
"We are going to work on getting the ball in and finishing. That's were we struggled tonight, we need to score goals."
The Blazers return to action on Friday, Sept. 2 in Nashville, Tenn. when they face Belmont.
