SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The UAB cross country team combated tough weather conditions as they competed at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday among a talented field featuring six nationally-ranked teams.
Due to severe rain in the South Bend area over the last week, the course was extremely wet, with soft spots throughout the course. Temperatures dipped into the low 50’s and winds blew at 20-30 mph.
No. 7 Florida State secured the meet’s title with 54 points, while 18th-ranked Arkansas tallied 116 points to finish as the runner-up. No. 2 New Mexico rounded out the top three finishers with a score of 164 points.
SMU’s Silje Fjortoft, a senior from Orsta, Norway, won the individual meet title with a time of 16:54.
"I think it was a good experience for everyone." head coach Tony Houchin said. "It gives us an idea of how much work we have to do between now and the Indiana State Pre-National race in two weeks."
Senior Rhiannon Johns was the front-runner for the Blazers completing the 5K in 17:52 to place 57th out of a field of 225 participants.
Junior Sarah Hudak clocked a time of 18:17 to place second for UAB and senior Clara Cid crossed the line in 18:32 to round out the Blazers’ top three runners. UAB’s fourth and fifth finishers were seniors Kristina Vaughn (18:51) and Lauren Fayen (19:19).
The Blazers return to action on Sunday, Oct. 16 at the Indiana State Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. The race is slated for a 12:20 p.m. CT start.
