Blazers Conclude Day 1 At Mid-Winter Classic

JONESBORO, Ark. -- The UAB bowling team won two of its five matches Friday, including a victory over a top-10 program, but finished 15th in total pinfall on the first day of competition at the 16-team Mid-Winter Classic.
The Blazers posted a five-game total of 4,103 in Friday's Baker matches at the Jonesboro Bowling Center.
Tournament host and eighth-ranked Arkansas State leads after day one with a total pinfall of 5,077 in a loaded field that includes five of the nation's top eight teams. Central Missouri (4,806) and Vanderbilt (4,791), each tied for sixth in the national rankings, are next heading into day two. No. 8 Nebraska (4,763) and No. 5 Sam Houston State (4,644) round out the top five.
UAB's Friday results were highlighted by a win over the nationally ranked Commodores (842-812) and a victory over Southern (839-810). The Blazers' three losses came at the hands of Nebraska (853-798), Prairie View A&M (787-744) and Jackson State (970-880).
Action continues Saturday morning with traditional team matches and will conclude on Sunday with bracket play using the Baker format.
