BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season Saturday with a 5-2 win over Austin Peay at the Samford Tennis Complex.
The Blazers (1-2) were dominant in the middle of the singles lineup, dropping just eight total games over three matches from No. 2 through No. 4 in the order.
UAB's Isabel Fernandez (No. 2) and Rachel Daniell (No. 3) posted identical 6-0, 6-3 victories over Austin Peay's Alison Carre and Ornella Di Salvo, respectively. Menanteau Moolman (No. 4) rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win for UAB over Vanessa Tavarez.
UAB's other singles win came from Rachel Cohen, who notched a straight-set victory over Jovana Karak, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 6 position as the Blazers won four of the six singles matches.
The points for Austin Peay (0-5) came at the No. 1 position, where Vanja Tomic won a pair of tight sets for a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Paula Alvarez, and at the No. 5 spot, where UAB's Richole Berger retired in the third set against Andra Cornea. After the players split the opening two sets, Berger retired at 2-1 in the third.
UAB already had one point in its pocket when the singles matches started thanks to its performance in doubles.
Alvarez and Fernandez defeated Carre and Di Salvo, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles, while Daniell and Moolman won, 8-3, over Tavarez and Cornea the No. 2. Austin Peay did not field a team for the third doubles match.
UAB is now off until Feb. 12 when South Alabama visits Birmingham for a 10 a.m. CT match. That contest will also be played at the Samford Tennis Complex.
