LEXINGTON, Ky. – Senior Kayla Orr went 3-for-4 with three doubles and junior Whitney Fletcher hit an inside-the-park home run in the UAB softball team’s 5-1 victory against UMKC in its first game of the University of Kentucky tournament on Friday.
Senior Mandy Lowman also contributed offensively, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, while freshman Amy Dennis scored one run and one RBI on one hit in one at bat.
Sophomore pitcher Leigh Streetman earned the win for UAB. She tossed a complete game and struck out a career-best 13 batters.
Deanna Friese was charged with the loss for the Roos. She allowed five runs on eight hits and struck out nine Blazer batters.
UMKC scored its lone run in the bottom of the third inning on a solo-shot over the left field wall from Katie Henning.
UAB got on the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning. With two outs K. Orr doubled to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. She scored on a double by Lowman to left field.
The Blazers added two runs in the second inning. Kate Armstrong walked to lead off the inning and Amy Dennis entered the game to pinch run. Erica Sisson reached first after hitting a grounder to second base. UMKC second baseman tried to get Dennis out at second, but she was called safe because the shortstop covering the base dropped the ball.
Lauren Webster bunted to load the bases and Tiffany Smith hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Dennis and advance the runners. Chandler Orr, who was the pinch runner for Sisson, scored from third on a wild pitch to give the Blazers a 3-0 lead.
UAB tacked on one more run in the third inning. K. Orr doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Dennis hit a blooper just in fair territory behind first base to score K. Orr.
In the fourth inning, Fletcher hit an inside-the-park home run. She launched the ball to center field and it bounced off the wall in the opposite direction of the fielder, allowing the speedster to score.
UAB continues play at the University of Kentucky tournament today against host Kentucky. Game time was originally scheduled for 5 p.m. ET, but was pushed back to 7:30 p.m. due to inclement weather.
