CLINTON, S.C. -- The UAB women's tennis team dropped a trio of three-set singles matches Friday in a 5-2 loss at Presbyterian as the Blazers played the first of three matches in the Carolinas this weekend.
UAB (3-5) picked up its points at the No. 4 and No. 6 singles positions. Menanteau Moolman won for the third straight match, taking down Presbyterian's Patricia Alves, 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot.
Rachel Cohen claimed the other point for the Blazers with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lindsay Krause at No. 6. It was a good result for Cohen, who has been hampered by injury early this season.
With Presbyterian (3-6) having already won the opening doubles point, UAB needed to win two of the other four singles matches. The Blazers were close in three of them but could not pull out a third set.
Presbyterian's Paige Oelke defeated Isabel Fernandez, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 at the top singles spot. Cara Caruso downed Paula Alvarez, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 position. And Caroline deLoach beat Caroline Faught, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 5.
The other Presbyterian point came at No. 3 singles, where Greer Ransom was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over UAB's Rachel Daniell.
Daniell teamed with Moolman for the duo's third straight victory on the doubles courts, taking down deLoach and Ransom, 8-2. But Presbyterian won both of the other two doubles contests to claim the doubles point.
Sarah Witkowski, another UAB player who has battled injury, saw her first action of the spring when she played at No. 3 doubles with Faught.
UAB is back in action Saturday as the Blazers visit Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C. The match is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. ET start.
