Men's Tennis Team Completes C-USA Shootout Sweep

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team completed a weekend sweep of three league opponents on Sunday as the 67th-ranked Blazers downed Southern Miss, 5-2, in the Conference USA Shootout at George Ward Park.
UAB (16-4, 3-1 C-USA) won all three doubles matches and then captured victories at four of six singles positions in winning for the ninth time in the last 10 matches.
The Blazers were able to win a pair of critical three-set matches at the No. 1 and 4 positions, including the match-clincher at the No. 4 spot by senior Daniel Moser, to put away the Golden Eagles.
Moser's 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Juan Escobar provided the fourth point for UAB as the Blazers added Southern Miss to their list of victims this weekend in the three-day event. UAB defeated East Carolina Friday before downing Tulane on Saturday.
The Blazers grabbed a 1-0 lead with their sweep in doubles play. Tom Puetz and David Zimmerman were 8-5 winners at No. 1 over Inaki Belloso and Escobar while Lucas Dirube and Chris Helliar beat the USM duo of Andrew Goodwin and Jovan Zeljkovic, 8-4, at No. 3.
Danny Manlow and Moser made it a sweep in doubles with their 8-7 win at No. 2 over Paulo Alvarado and Michael Elortegui.
Southern Miss tied the match at 1-1 with Goodwin's 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles over Puetz who rolled his ankle during play and never fully recovered.
The Blazers then reeled off four straight wins to take a 5-1 lead in securing the victory.
Helliar downed Belloso at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2 with Dirube taking a 7-5, 6-2 win over Zeljkovic at the No. 5 spot.
Moser clinched the win at No. 4 singles before Manlow won a three-setter over Golden Eagle freshman Matt Frost, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.
Southern Miss (9-11, 1-3 C-USA) notched its second point in the match with Alvarado edging Zimmerman, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6, at No. 2 singles.
UAB will be back in action on Tuesday, April 10 when the Blazers travel to Middle Tennessee in a 1:00 p.m. CT match.
