Blazers Complete 4-3 Win Over Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The UAB women's tennis team finished off a 4-3 win Friday morning over Southern Miss in a match that was suspended by darkness a night earlier.
Knotted at 3-3 after singles play was completed on Thursday, the Blazers took two of the three doubles matches completed Friday to claim the clinching point.
UAB improved to 6-8 on the season and will play again Friday at 12 p.m. CT against Memphis in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss dropped to 2-16 with the loss.
UAB's Paula Alvarez and Isabel Fernandez teamed to defeat Frances Askew and Kate Lanier by an 8-2 score at No. 1 doubles, and Caroline Faught and Sarah Witkowski posted an 8-1 win over Mackenzie Oskin and Alexus Coats at the No. 3 position as the Blazers locked up the team victory.
The lone doubles loss for UAB came at the No. 2 spot, where Rachel Daniell and Menanteau Moolman dropped an 8-6 decision to Elja van Berlo and Alex Bradley.
In singles action completed Thursday, Daniell was a straight-set winner over Lanier, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3, and Faught followed with a win in straight sets over Oskin, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 4.
Moolman provided the Blazers' third win, posting a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 victory over Moorea Williams at No. 5. Two other matches also went three sets, but Southern Miss was able to pull out both.
The Lady Eagles got a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win from Coats over Alvarez at No. 1 and a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 win from Bradley over Rachel Cohen at No. 6. The other USM win came in straight sets with van Berlo topping Fernandez, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 2.
After rain delayed the start of Thursday's play, the teams decided to begin with singles action so doubles could be played only if necessary. It proved necessary when singles ended with the teams deadlocked.
When the darkness set in during doubles play Thursday night, the decision was made to suspend the match until Friday morning.
