Women's Tennis Tops Samford, 4-3

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB women’s tennis team used three straight-set singles wins to get by Samford, 4-3, on Wednesday at the Samford Tennis Courts.
Now at 6-1 overall on the year, the Blazers host Chattanooga Thursday at 12:30 p.m. CT at George Ward Park.
On Wednesday, UAB used a 9-8 (5) win at the first position in doubles from the tandem of Menanteau Moolman and Rachel Daniell to take the point, while Blazer Sarah Witkowski clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win at the sixth singles position.
“We competed hard today, especially in doubles,” UAB head coach Lisa Jackson said. “I am proud of Sarah (Witkowski) for clinching the match under a pressure situation. Now, we have to refocus for a tough contest against Chattanooga tomorrow.”
The Blazers started the day with a stiff test in doubles. The two teams split the second and third courts with UAB’s team of Witkowski and Caroline Faught taking an 8-6 loss to the Bulldog tandem of Carita Moolman and Adri Lochner.
At the third position, UAB picked up a win when Elaine Simon and Isabel Fernandez ousted Samford’s Jessica Northcutt and Emily Mallory, 8-6, before Moolman and Daniell clinched the point at the top spot.
In singles, Samford took the first win to tie the match at 1-1. That victory came at the third court where Stephanie N’tcha defeated Moolman, 6-3, 6-0.
UAB followed that loss with two-straight wins at the first and second positions. At court No. 2, Daniell ran past Northcutt, 6-4, 6-0, before Fernandez took a 6-4, 7-5 win at the top position.
Up 3-1, the Blazers then took a loss from Simon, who fell, 6-4, 6-1, to Mallory at court No. 5. With the match at 3-2 in favor of UAB, Witkowski then clinched the Blazers’ sixth win with a victory over Ann Marie Lyon.
UAB takes its 6-1 record against Chattanooga on Thursday before trekking to Auburn on Saturday for a 4 p.m. CT first serve.
