Women's Tennis Drops 5-2 Match To ULM

MONROE, La. ----- Freshman Elaine Simon and senior Isabel Fernandez picked up two singles wins, but it was not enough as the UAB women’s tennis team fell to ULM, 5-2, on Monday.
With the loss, the Blazers fall to 8-5 on the season and head home for five-straight matches at George Ward Park. The Blazers play No. 15 Notre Dame on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. CT.
ULM improves to 9-1 on the season and has won three consecutive contests.
The Blazers started strong on the doubles courts, but lost two heartbreaking matches at the first two positions. At the No. 1 court, ULM’s Sophie Rufyikiri and Ema Turudija defeated Menanteau Moolman and Rachel Daniell, 9-8 (2), before the Blazer tandem of Sarah Witkowski and Caroline Faught dropped another tight 9-8 (5) match at the second court.
The Warhawks’ duo of Medy Blankvoort and Justyna Krol defeated Fernandez and Simon, 8-4, as ULM claimed all three courts to clinch the point.
In singles, Fernandez and Simon rebounded from their doubles’ loss for two singles’ triumphs.
Fernandez took down ULM’s Rufyikiri, 6-2, 6-2,at the No. 1 spot, while Simon ousted Petra Horakova, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5) at the sixth court.
Those were UAB’s only wins in singles play, however, as the Warhawks rallied on the remaining four courts for the 5-2 victory.
Following the Blazers’ battle against the Fighting Irish on Thursday, UAB returns to the courts to face Murray State on March 21 at 11 a.m. CT.
