BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--Senior third baseman Kate Armstrong hit her second home run of the year in the bottom of the second frame as UAB topped East Carolina, 2-1, in the televised series finale at the UAB Softball Field.
"Kate had a very good weekend," head coach Marla Townsend said. "The home run she had today was a solid shot and I really can't wait for her to see the video of how great an at bat it was. She did a great job of laying off the pitch prior to that. She made the pitcher bring it up and had a great hit that cut through all the wind."
The Blazers improve to 13-6 on the year and 5-1 in Conference USA action. The Pirates fall to 9-17 and 1-2 in league play.
In the circle for UAB, junior pitcher Lannah Campbell(2-1) threw her first complete game of the year and struck out nine, which marks a season high.
"Lannah did a great job mixing it up," Townsend said. "Nine strikeouts was great, and I'm very pleased. Everyone played great today."
UAB got on the board first, in the second inning, with Armstrong's home run to left field. Next, junior first baseman Megan McGrath drew a walk, and was advanced to second when freshman Caitlin Attfield singled to East Carolina's second baseman. McGrath then continued to third on a Pirate throwing error.
Sophomore Amy Dennis drove in UAB's second run of the game as she singled to left field and McGrath ran home.
East Carolina got on the board in the top of the fifth frame as their first baseman, Jordan Lewis, doubled to center field, and advanced to third as catcher Kai Clark grounded out to third base. A fielding error by second base allowed Lewis to run home.
In the final two innings, Campbell struck out three batters and didn't give up any hits to preserve UAB's slim lead.
For the weekend, the Satsuma, Ala., native recorded an ERA of 0.00, struck out 14 batters in 10.2 innings and recorded her fourth save of the year.
Armstrong led the Blazers at the plate during the series with the Pirates with a .667 batting average, six hits, one home run, two RBI and a slugging percentage of 1.111.
Up next, the Blazers travel to Montgomery, Ala., for two games at Alabama State on Tuesday. First pitch is at 1 p.m. CT. On Wednesday, UAB will have a rematch against South Alabama, starting at 4 p.m. CT.
