South Alabama Tops Women's Tennis, 4-3, In Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. – The UAB women’s tennis team jumped out to 2-0 lead but quickly saw that advantage disappear in a 4-3 loss at South Alabama on Saturday.
The Blazers fall to 12-7 overall and see their four-match win streak come to an end in the loss, while USA improves to 15-9 overall on the season.
“All credit goes to South Alabama for playing a great match,” UAB head coach Lisa Jackson said. “Overall as a team, they competed at a higher level than we did today. Now, we have to bounce back against a tough West Florida team tomorrow.”
UAB started the day with an impressive showing on the doubles courts. Following an 8-0 loss from Menanteau Moolman and Rachel Daniell at the top position, the Blazers rebounded with a pair of victories as Elaine Simon and Isabel Fernandez won, 8-6, at the third spot, before Sarah Witkowski and Caroline Faught won a thrilling 9-7 contest at the middle court to take the point.
The Blazers continued that momentum in singles when Faught battled past the Jaguars’ Ghermani Ramona at the No. 3 court, 6-2, 6-2, to give UAB the 2-0 advantage.
From that point on, USA rolled off four wins at the remaining five positions to complete a come-from-behind win over the Blazers.
The Green and Gold’s only triumph the rest of the way came from Fernandez, who ousted the Jaguars’ Mchaela Meszarosova, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1, at the first position.
UAB faces a quick turnaround with a match at Pensacola, Fla., against West Florida – a team that is ranked No. 9 in the ITA Division II rankings. Match time for that contest is slated for 11 a.m. CT Sunday.
