BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--Designated player Kristen McGrath hit a three-RBI home run in the bottom of the third inning as UAB softball topped Chattanooga, 3-0, on Tuesday at the UAB Softball Field.
A second game was scheduled, but Chattanooga (26-22) forfeited, and UAB will be credited with a 7-0 win, advancing the team to an overall record of 34-13.
In game one, junior Lannah Campbell (10-4) threw a complete game, striking out two in her second consecutive shutout.
For Chattanooga, pitcher Taylor Deason (16-10) also pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and three runs.
The Mocs got runners in scoring position four times throughout the game, but the Blazer defense held firm, including a double play on a sacrifice bunt attempt in the top of the second inning. Senior catcher Anna Kimbrell threw to sophomore Heather Pearson at first base to get the second out. Pearson then threw to senior Kate Armstrong at third base to tag the lead runner and get the third out of the frame.
In the bottom of the third, freshman Caitlin Attfield led things off with a single up the middle, and was advanced to second as Pearson was hit by pitch. A strikeout and a fly-out to left put a pair of outs on the board before McGrath stepped up to bat.
McGrath fell behind in the count, 0-2, before hitting her 11th home run of the year over the left field fence.
McGrath has now hit 29 home runs in her career, three away from tying the school record of 32.
On the day, McGrath and Attfield led the squad with matching .667 batting averages, while McGrath slugged 1.667.
Up next, UAB will play in its home finale, against Jacksonville State on Wednesday at 4 p.m. CT.
