HOUSTON, Texas--The UAB softball team dropped its doubleheader with Houston on Saturday, losing both games by a score of 4-1, at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
With the losses, UAB is now 35-15 on the year with an 18-4 record in C-USA action. Houston is now 37-16 with a mark of 19-4 in league.
The Blazers can still win the regular season title with a win on Sunday. First pitch for the series finale is at Noon CT.
Game 1
Houston 4, UAB 1
Houston loaded the bases in the bottom of the second on three consecutive hits, and a Blazer fielding error at third allowed Kendra Cullum to reach third base while the three runners scored, unearned. Cullum was then scored on a double by Holly Anderson before a grounder to short ended the inning.
"We beat ourselves in the first game," head coach Marla Townsend said. "We gave up four unearned runs, and I'm just challenging the team to come out tomorrow and play with their heart, which has got us to where we are right now. I also challenged them to understand that Houston's a great team and we have got to be able to hit with them and we have to play defense. If we do that, I can guarantee that it's going to be an exciting ballgame tomorrow."
The Blazers got on the board in the top of the seventh, as sophomore Amy Dennis doubled to center field, and freshman Caitlin Attfield posted a double of her own to plate the run.
UAB continued to attempt its comeback as senior Whitney Fletcher singled up the middle, sending Attfield to third. UAB loaded the bases as senior Kate Armstrong was hit by pitch, but a groundout double play ended the game in favor of the Cougars.
In the circle, junior Lannah Campbell (11-5) threw a complete game in the loss, striking out four and not giving up an earned run. For Houston, Diedre Outon picked up the win, allowing five hits and one run.
Game 2
Houston 4, UAB 1
Junior designated player Kristen McGrath got the Blazers on the board with a one-out home run to left center. The home run marks her 12th of the year and the 31st of her career, placing her one away from tying the school record of 32, set by Mandy Lowman (2009-12).
In the bottom of the third, Houston tied the game with a home run to right by D. Outon, before an RBI fielder's choice by Haley Outon scored another run. A flyout to right field and a grounder to second base ended the inning.
Houston plated another run in the bottom of the sixth as D. Outon singled up the middle to score Reina Gaber, who reached on a double. D. Outon was scored on a triple to right center by Katie St. Pierre to stretch the Cougar lead to 4-1.
In the circle, pitcher Leigh Streetman (12-7) threw a complete game in the loss, and struck out five batters. For Houston, Bailey Watts (18-5) threw a complete game and gave up McGrath's home run.
