BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's soccer team dropped its home opener on Sunday night, falling to Ole Miss 5-2. Sophomore Paige Hanks knocked in two goals for the Blazers with Megan Collins assisting on both scores.
UAB (1-1) fell behind the Rebels (2-0) 3-0 early on in the first half before Hanks got things started for the Blazers with her goal in the 20th minute. On the score, Hanks was able to head in the cross by Collins.
Just over three minutes later, Hanks would strike again, slipping past the Ole Miss defense to score on the breakaway.
"We started out slow and you can't do that against a team like that and give up goals like that," said head coach Harold Warren. "They're a well-coached team and they are tactical and athletic and we fought our way back."
Trying to get the equalizer, the Blazers came out pressing in the second half but weren't able to find the back of the net.
"The problem was that once we got momentum, it stopped," added Warren. "We have to learn to push on, especially against good teams like that."
In the 82nd-minute, Olivia Harrison netted a goal for the Rebels to put the game out of reach for the Blazers. Ole Miss would add another late goal.
Angelica Jimenez took the loss for UAB to fall to 1-1 on the season. Kelly McCormick picked up the win for Ole Miss to improve to 2-0.
"We had good moments in both games this weekend and we learned we can play with these teams," Warren said. "We just have to be more consistent and have a 90-minute mentality."
Next up for the Blazers is a trip to Orangeburg, S.C., to participate in the South Carolina State Tournament. The Blazers will face Francis Marion on Friday night before taking on host South Carolina State on Sunday morning.
