HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The UAB women's soccer team netted an early goal at Southern Miss, but a Golden Eagles' equalizer late would end the match, 1-1. The Blazers remain unbeaten in Conference USA play for the first time since 2006.
"We were not as clean or as intelligent as we needed to be in possession and made mistakes, but we did enough to where we should have won," said head coach Harold Warren. "Our game management during the last five minutes was not good. Game management is something that we work on, and we didn't do what we were supposed to and let it slip away. Credit Southern Miss, they kept working and kept fighting. We just needed to be smarter."
In the 87th minute, Southern Miss (5-6-1, 0-2-1 C-USA) spoiled UAB's (5-5-1, 2-0-1 C-USA) consecutive-shutout streak with a goal from Casey Adkins. The tally was the first goal surrendered by the Blazer defense in 363:24 minutes, which is the longest streak since going 374:16 minutes without allowing a goal in 2007.
Sophomore forward Kimberly Fincher broke the scoreless tie with her third goal of the year in the 51st minute. Sophomore midfielder Morgan Key-Adams found Fincher 10-yards out and beat the Golden Eagles' keeper Brittany Taylor to the far post.
Fincher's goal is her third in as many games. She found the back of the net on two occasions against UTSA on Sept. 26. After tallying two goals last outing against UTEP, Key-Adams has now recorded points in back-to-back games.
Junior goalkeeper Angelica Jimenez turned away six shots, brining her season total to a conference-best 68 saves.
UAB outshot Southern Miss 19-18 and put four more shots on frame. The Blazers are now 4-1-1 when scoring first and 2-1-1 when outshooting their opponent.
UAB continues its weekend road trip at Louisiana Tech on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs come into the weekend 8-3-1 and looking for their first C-USA win of the season.
