BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB women’s cross country team begins its championship season at the Conference USA Championships in Denton, Texas, at the Eagle Point Cross Country Course on Saturday at 9 a.m.
“This is the race that we look forward to all year long, and the way training has been going, I think we should see a greatly improved conference finish with several All-C-USA performers,” said coach head Tony Houchin. “These Blazer women are fired up and ready to go to work.”
The Blazers are coming off an 11th-place finish out of a field of 33 teams at the Crimson Classic. UAB finished second of the three C-USA teams participating, placing three runners in the top 40 of 292.
Three different Blazers have broken the 18-minute barrier this season in the 5K, with freshman Rebecca Evans leading the way with a 17:46.76.
UAB has competed in one 6K event this season, taking first place at the Azalea City Classic on Sept. 12. The Blazers placed four runners in the top 10. Sophomore Sarah Livett crossed the line in second place, finishing in 20:41.24.
At last season’s C-USA Championships, UAB finished in eighth as a team with an average time of 18:32. Livett was the second Blazer to finish, coming in 26th place with a time of 18:15.3 for the 5K course.
