UAB Suffers, 66-58, Loss To North Texas

DENTON, Texas - The UAB women's basketball team had cut the lead to one point with two minutes remaining, but North Texas was able to hold on for a 66-58 win. It was the Blazers' first loss on the road in Conference USA play.

"We just had too many breakdowns defensively," said head coach Randy Norton. "We didn't stick to the game plan and offensively we didn't shoot it very well. Shooting 37 percent is not going to win us very many games."

Senior Karisma Chapman led UAB (11-9, 3-4 C-USA) with her seventh consecutive double-double. She finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Khoria Newman scored a career-high nine points and fellow sophomore Chelsee Black hit three 3-pointers to finish with nine.

North Texas (9-12, 3-5 C-USA) took the first lead of the game and used a 7-0 run to go up 12-5 at the 13:17 mark in the first half. UAB steadily closed the gap and the third three of the half from Black made it 30-26.

Sophomore Brittany Winborne converted a layup then Chapman came away with a steal on the other end and drew the foul to send the Blazers into the half down, 31-29.

UAB came out strong in the second half, scoring the first five points to take its first lead of the game at 33-31 after a jumper by sophomore Kayla Anderson. The Mean Green shortly took the lead back until Anderson hit a layup to tie it up for the third time of the half, 35-35.

The teams battled back and forth and UAB got back within one, 42-41, but North Texas used an 8-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 50-41. Senior Ashley Grimes hit a jumper and drew the foul to end the Mean Green's run.

Newman and Burroughs each connected on threes as UAB was able to pull within one again, 53-52, with 7:05 left in the game. Then a layup from Winborne, who finished with eight points off the bench, tied the game up at 54-54 at the 5:04 mark.

North Texas was able to use a 5-0 run to push the lead back in its favor. The Blazers responded with a 4-0 run to cut the lead to one with 1:52 to play, but Briesha Wynn hit a three to halt UAB's momentum and seal the win for the Mean Green.

Wynn led North Texas with 19 points and Alexis Hyder finished with 12 points and a team-high seven points for the Mean Green.

"As their coach, I believe in these kids," stated Norton. "We are just going to continue to work hard and get better. It is all about the process. We are going to stick to it and finish the season strong."

Eight of the nine players that saw action for UAB scored and the bench provided 22 points on the afternoon. UAB shot 37.1 percent from the field, while North Texas finished 46.2 percent from the field.

UAB will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 5 as it travels to Boca Raton, Fla. to take on Florida Atlantic. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT.
