MOBILE, Ala. – The No. 21 UAB softball team split a pair of games against Austin Peay and Syracuse on Saturday to close out the weekend of competition at the South Alabama Mardi Gras Invitational.
The Blazers (1-3) defeated Austin Peay, 4-1, to pick up their first win of 2014, and dropped their second game of the day in a nine-inning marathon, 3-2, to Syracuse.
UAB defeated Austin Peay behind a strong performance in the circle from senior pitcher Leigh Streetman. The Hueytown, Ala., native tossed a complete game and struck out 14 Austin Peay Batters allowing just one run on three hits.
The Lady Govs struck first in the first inning on a RBI single, but went scoreless the remainder of the game. UAB opened its scoring in the fourth inning when Amy Dennis was hit by a pitch to pick up an RBI and score Danii Hernandez.
The Blazers added a run in the fifth and took the lead when Anna Theriot hit a soft grounder to the shortstop to pick up her first RBI of the season. UAB went on to score two more runs in the sixth when Kristen McGrath singles to left field to score Dennis. Heather Pearson scored the game’s final run when Hayley Davis was hit by a pitch to seal the win for the Blazers.
Davis finished 2-for-3 at the plate, while Dennis, Kristen McGrath, Davis and Theriot all recorded an RBI.
In game two, Syracuse struck first on a 2-run home run from Jasmine Watson in the bottom of the second. UAB answered in the third and fourth innings to tie it a 2-2. The score would stay the same up until the ninth inning when Syracuse singled through the right side to score the game-winning run.
Lannah Campbell tossed 5.1 innings in the circle and allowed four hits and two runs. Streetman came in to relieve Campbell and threw 2.2 innings and struck out six Orange batters and allowed just two hits.
Kristen McGrath finished with one RBI and Anna Theriot also added an RBI on a double that scored Ashley Johnson.
The Blazers will be back in action next weekend, Feb. 14-16, as they travel to Waco, Texas for the Getterman Classic.
