BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB cross country team will kick off its season on Friday in the first of four regular-season meets at the Belmont Opener in Nashville, Tenn.
The 2014 Belmont Opener at Percy Warner Park gets underway at 5:30 p.m. CT with the women’s 5K. The Blazers return seven runners from last season and welcome two newcomers to the team.
"The beginning of every season is an exciting time," head coach Tony Houchin said. "With ranked teams from several regions and several C-USA opponents, we're going to see where we're at pretty quickly. Practice has been going well and I'm sure that once the gun goes off everyone will step up and do their part."
Sophomore Hannah Coffin, junior Kristie Leybourne, sophomore Sarah Livett, sophomore Laurie Pray, senior Lauren Scott, senior Jenna Wesley and freshman Allison Wortel all return for the fall season, while UAB welcomes England native Lucy Crookes and Wales native Rebecca Evans.
UAB was ranked 15th in the preseason USTFCCCA South Region Rankings on Monday. The Green and Gold will run in the South Alabama Azalea City Classic, Greater Louisville Classic and UE Invitational before competing at the C-USA Championship and the NCAA’s in November.
