BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s soccer team ended its five-game skid with a 7-0 victory over the visiting Chattanooga Mocs Friday night at West Campus Field. The Blazers held Chattanooga to no shots until the 75th minute, as six different players accounted for UAB’s seven goals.
“A lot of the games we dropped we weren’t’ finishing opportunities, so tonight it was nice to see us finish those chances,” said coach Warren. “We did well to move the ball and the girls worked together. We were pressing high up the field and that created many of our opportunities.”
Senior midfielder Johanna Liney broke the scoreless tie in the 16th minute, tallying her team-high third goal of the season on a break away, beating the Mocs’ (1-7, 0-0 SoCon) Hannah Dunn on the right post. Liney found the back of the net a second time in the 82nd minute. She took a ball played forward by junior midfielder Paige Hanks and beat the keeper from 25 yards out.
Sophomore midfielder Sarah Morris and freshman midfielder Rachel Green gave UAB (3-5, 0-0 C-USA) the 3-0 advantage into the locker room with their second goals of the season. Morris’ goal came off a cross from sophomore forward Kasey Johnson, while Green played a ball off the post that beat Dunn far post.
Sophomore forward Sharon Osterbind and Johnson found the back of the net for the first time this season, both recording goals in the second half. Johnson moved into a tie for fourth place in the UAB women’s soccer record book with nine shots in a single match.
After assisting on Liney’s second mark, Hanks quickly scored the 12th goal of her career for the green and gold, placing a ball 12 yards out past Dunn.
UAB posted a season-high 33 shots, 15 finding their way on goal. The seven-goal total is the most in program history since October 29, 2004, when the Blazers defeated DePaul in Birmingham, 7-2. The last time UAB won by seven or more goals came again in the 2004 season at Houston, where the Blazers downed the Cougars 8-0. UAB has now outscored Chattanooga by a combined score of 15-0 in two meetings.
UAB takes the field again on Friday, Sept. 26, against UTSA at 7 p.m., then again on Sunday, Sept. 28, against UTEP at noon. Both matches will be played at West Campus Field.
