Kianoush, Castro Pick Up Singles Wins Against No. 56 Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ---- UAB sophomores Pardis Kianoush and Paula Castro each picked up a singles win on Sunday as the Blazers' women's tennis team fell to No. 56 Memphis, 5-2, at the Indoor Racquet Club.
After falling at all three doubles courts, UAB was able to pick up two singles wins to wrap up the day. Kianoush defeated Tiger senior Liza Tymchenko in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 2 singles court. The win marked Kianoush's 13th dual-match singles win during her young career at UAB.
Teammate and fellow Blazer sophomore Paula Castro bounced back after losing the first set to down UM's Tara McElroy, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 6 singles spot.
Memphis, who entered the match following a 14-9 record and a third-place finish in the American Athletic Conference a season ago, picked up straight-set wins at the remaining singles courts to take the 5-2 victory over UAB.
Next up, the Blazers travel to Starkville, Miss., to take on Mississippi State at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday, Jan. 31.
