BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The No. 16 UAB bowling team will make its first postseason appearance after being selected for the 2015 XBowling Intercollegiate Team Championships, the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) announced on Wednesday.
"We are so excited to qualify for our first postseason appearance at USBC," head coach Michelle Crews said. "Our main goal this year was to qualify, and we did that. Now it is time to step up and work that much harder."
UAB (54-41) has had a record setting season in its fourth year earning its first ranking in the NTCA poll and eclipsing its highest win total in a single season early this spring. The Blazers have now added to those accolades with their first selection for postseason play.
"We are going to have strong competition in Smyrna, with past national championship teams present, but we are ready to compete against the best," Crews stated. "I just keep telling the girls we are not done yet. Now is our time to show everyone what UAB is made of."
There will be four sectional qualifiers that will be held March 14-15. UAB was selected to compete in Smyrna, Tenn. at Smyrna Bowl. The top four teams in each division at each sectional will advance to the 2015 XBowling Intercollegiate Team Championships, which will be held April 15-18 at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, Kan.
Along with the Blazers, the Smyrna Sectional will include Adrian, Aquinas, Ball State, Bethel, Campbellsville, Central Florida, Concordia, Cumberlands, Emmanuel, Florida State, Huntinton, Indiana Tech, Lindenwood, Marian, McKendree, Pikeville and St. Catharine.
Sectional assignments are based on the Team Ranking System points earned in USBC Collegiate-certified competition throughout the season. The format will consist of 32 Baker games each day for a total of 64 Baker games. The top four teams based on total pinfall will advance. In addition, competitors at each of the four sectional events will bowl six games on March 13. The top four women at each sectional will advance to the national singles tournament on April 14 and 18 in Wichita.
UAB has one regular season tournament remaining as it will have a chance to play in Smyrna prior to the sectional, at the Music City Classic held March 6-8.
