AUBURN, Ala. – The UAB softball team fell to the Evansville Purple Aces, 7-6, on Sunday in the last day of the Plainsman Invite at Jane B. Moore Field.
Mickaela Fleming (1-1) was the winning pitcher for the Purple Aces, while Megan Smith (2-2) was charged with the loss for the Blazers.
Before the final result, the Blazers (2-3) had battled back to tie the game up three times – once in the second, once in the third and once in the sixth.
Evansville put the first two runs on the board in the first inning. Following an E4, the Purple Aces’ Courtney Land tripled into the right field gap to plate the first runner. Susan Norris followed with a single just inside the left field line to make the score 2-0.
The Blazers responded in the bottom of the second to knot the game up at two apiece on back-to-back solo home runs from Sara Beth Williamson and Anna Theriot.
Evansville’s Norris followed the next inning with a solo homer to left center to retake the lead, but the Blazers tied it back up in the bottom of the frame. Amy Dennis set the table with a single and stolen base, and Ashley Johnson sent a single back up the middle to plate Dennis from second.
The Purple Aces took their third lead of the game with a home run in the top of the fifth. Norris walked to put a baserunner on for Hayli Scott, who homered over the left field wall to take a 5-3 advantage.
The Blazers tied it up for the third time in the bottom of the sixth. Hayley Davis led off the inning with a single into left, and Mary Warren followed by slugging a two-run home run to center field to tie the game at five apiece.
After loading the bases with none out, the Purple Aces brought two home to take a 7-5 lead. Scott sent a single back up the middle, allowing the first two Evansville baserunners to score.
With UAB runners on first and second, Williamson singled through the right side to plate one in the seventh, but the Blazers were unable to bring any more home, closing the scoring at 7-6.
