BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- After allowing a Memphis goal in the opening minutes, UAB shut the Tigers out for over 83 minutes of play, but the lone goal was enough to secure the 1-0 victory for Memphis at West Campus Field on Sunday night.
"It was a battle between two teams that needed to win," said UAB head coach Harold Warren. "We made a little mistake, and we were punished for it. We had opportunities, but at times, we were looking around to play the ball rather than to score it right away. The team battled hard and definitely improved from Friday night."
Senior Angelica Jimenez made her first start of the season for the Blazers (1-2) and proved tough for the Memphis (2-1) offense. The goalkeeper made four saves and allowed the lone goal.
Marys Bard-Martel picked up the win in-goal for the Tigers, making three saves to shut the Blazers out.
"We have two keepers we have been playing this season, and both have done a good job, which is a positive," said Warren. "We have a goalkeeping core that can get the job done. Angie obviously has some experience and leadership skills which helped us tonight."
The lone Memphis goal came in the seventh minute when Necee Jennings found the net for the Tigers. Memphis took 12 shots on the night, but the Blazer defense held strong to not allow an additional goal.
UAB saw five different Blazers take shots throughout the game with three coming from the freshman contingent. Three of the Blazers' shots were on goal, but the Memphis defense held strong to not allow a UAB goal.
"Memphis started the first 10 minutes strong, but we came back after that," said Warren. "It's just the final third and not making these mistakes that punish us. We are a young team, and we are getting there. This is probably the toughest weekend of the year in Auburn and Memphis. It's was a brutal weekend."
The Blazers will return to West Campus field on Friday, September 4 when UAB hosts Costal Carolina. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
