NASHVILLE, Tenn. ----- A pair of top 25 individual finishes highlighted UAB cross country's showing Saturday in the Blazers' season-opening meet at the Belmont Opener.
Lucy Crookes (18th, 18:24.5) and Rebecca Evans (25th, 18:53.5) helped lead UAB to a fifth place effort in the nine-team field. Lipscomb captured the team title with Vanderbilt placing second.
"This was an important opening meet for us," said UAB head track and field coach Kurt Thomas. "Coach (Matt) Esche wanted the ladies to execute very specific race plans, and they bought in and did a good job of that. A few ladies ran a little faster than last year, and everyone felt that they had some left in the tank. It was a solid opening race for the season.
"The team will be back on the same course in two weeks for the Vanderbilt meet, so they will go back to work and get better."
Other UAB finishers Saturday included Hannah Coffin, 21:39.5; Allison Wortel, 22:02.1; and Laurie Pray, 22:10.4.
Hannah Wittman of Belmont was the individual winner at 17:23.6.
