UAB Earns Victory over No. 72 UNC Wilmington

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men’s tennis team took down No. 72 UNC Wilmington, 5-2, Friday afternoon at Lakeshore Tennis Center.
The Blazers (1-1) jumped out to an early lead with a victory in doubles play. Despite the Seahawks (2-2) taking an early 1-0 lead in doubles, UAB fought back to win on courts one and three to give it a 1-0 advantage.
To start out singles play, UNC Wilmington knotted the match at 1-all as Christiaan Van der Burgh won on court three, 6-1, 6-3, against Oliver Poysti.
UNC Wilmington grabbed its first lead of the day, 2-1, with a victory on court one with a 6-2, 6-3 decision.
The Blazers quickly bounced back on court two as Christian Coetzee picked up his first win of the season, 6-3, 706 (5) to tie the match up at two.
It was all UAB to close out the day as the Blazers took home wins on courts four, five and six to earn their first win of the 2016 campaign.
UAB returns to the courts on Sunday at it hosts in-state foe North Alabama.
