AUBURN, Ala. – Eric Komati claimed the consolation singles bracket title of the 2016 ITA Southern Regional with three wins on Sunday at Auburn’s Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Komati, who won a pair of matches on Saturday to reach the fourth round, defeated Mississippi State’s Vaughn Hunter in a grueling 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 match to reach the quarterfinals on Sunday. The senior co-captain then upended Louisiana’s Vlad Kramarov 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals before downing Tulane’s Luis Erlenbusch in two sets, 6-2, 6-4, in the consolation final for his third win of the day.
“Eric played extremely well this weekend,” head coach Derek Tarr said. “He won a total of six matches against formidable competition and won three consecutive matches today, which is a feat in itself."
Komati improved to 11-2 in singles action this fall, including his six wins to complete the ITA Southern Regional.
Overall on the weekend, Komati and Christian Coetzee earned a doubles victory before falling to Mississippi State, who battles for the doubles title tomorrow at 1 p.m. Kenton Parton won his match over Alabama’s Hayes Brewer, before falling in the round of 64.
UAB returns to action on November 4, as it is set to compete in the Birmingham Country Club Collegiate in Birmingham.
