HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Shontelle Smith scored her fourth goal of the season to lift Marshall to a 1-0 victory over the UAB women’s soccer team Friday afternoon from Veterans Memorial Soccer Stadium.
Smith gained control of the ball near midfield and dribbled into the UAB box and delivered a shot to the opposite post for the game-winning goal in the 17th minute.
Blazer midfielder Marin Carter produced UAB’s first scoring chance with a shot on goal in the 38th minute, but Marshall keeper Megan Bonelli made the first of her four saves to negate the opportunity.
Megan Hudgens led UAB in shots and opened the second half with a shot on goal in the 46th minute. Hudgens paces the Blazers with 27 shots this season and has fired a team-best 14 during league play.
Bonelli registered saves on shots from Caroline Kehrer and Rachel Green later in the half on her way to posting her first shutout of the season.
Blazer goalie Kelsey Daugherty finished with a season-high nine saves, tying a mark she recorded Sept. 18 at Middle Tennessee. The Kennesaw, Ga., native has allowed just one goal or fewer in four straight matches and ranks third in Conference USA with 60 saves.
UAB (4-7-1, 1-3-1 C-USA) returns to the pitch Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Blazers travel to Bowling Green, Ky., to face WKU.
