BRANDON, Miss.- The UAB Bowling team forced a game seven in the championship match of the Jackson State Sonic Boom but fell 4-3 to Tulane to finish in second place.
The Blazers squared off with the Green Wave two times today. In the first match UAB picked up a win in the third match but Tulane overpowered the Blazers to win 4-1.
The loss matched UAB up with Jackson State in the semi-finals. Jackson State won the first game by just two pins, 180-178, before UAB rattled off four consecutive victories to set up a rematch with Tulane in the championship match.
In the day’s final match UAB picked up wins in the first, third, and fifth games, while Tulane picked up wins in the second, fourth, and sixth game. In a winner take all game seven, Tulane’s 202 pinfall proved to be to much for the Blazers as the Green Wave took home team honors.
“Although the weekend didn’t turn out like we hoped, to finish second in the field and have three top ten finishers is a great confidence booster,” head coach Michelle Crews said. “We will use this weekend as momentum in our preparation for the UMES Hawk Invitational.”
Individually, Taylor Russell’s fifth place honors earned her a spot on the Jackson State Sonic Boom All-Tournament team. Her score of 234 in Saturday’s third match secured her spot in the top-five.
Caitlin Cunningham averaged a 193.80 total pinfall over five games to finish seventh. And Madeleine McDuff’s hot start in Saturday’s match against Alabama State locked up her ninth place finish.
Michelle NG of Tulane took home individual honors after bowling a 225.40 average. Her closest competitor, Marcella Sanchez of Jackson State, averaged a 206.40.
The UAB Bowling team returns to the lanes Friday, Nov. 18, when they travel to Millsboro, Del. to compete in the UMES Hawk Classic.
