MILLSBORO, Del.- The UAB Bowling team battled on the final day of competition to move up one spot and finish fifth in the UMES Hawk Classic. UAB won two of three matches on the final day to finish with a 10-4 over the weekend.
After two days of qualifying the Blazers entered the championship day in sixth place. UAB downed Adelphi, 4-2, in its first match of the day. The win set up a match with, defending national champion, Stephen F. Austin where the Lumberjacks 217 in the fifth game proved to be to much for the Blazers as they defeated UAB, 4-1. In the day’s final match, UAB battled back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat No. 10 Central Missouri, 4-2.
Individually, Madeleine McDuff was named to the UMES Hawk Classic All Tournament First Team while Taylor Russell was named second team all-tournament. Players are named to the teams based on total pinfall and coach votes.
For McDuff this was her first time earning all-tournament honors this season. Russell cracked the all-tournament roster for the second consecutive week after being named to the Jackson State Sonic Boom team Nov. 13.
“We had a great day today in match play, our best outing of the season,” head coach Michelle Crews said. “We had an amazing win against Adelphi this morning and a tough loss to last season’s national champion Stephen F. Austin. We ended the day with the girls spitting fire to pull out a win against No. 9 Central Missouri. I am very proud of how hard the girls fought all weekend and they showed how much they have grown in a short amount of time.”
UAB takes a break from the lanes before returning for the All State Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational, Dec. 2-4.
“Our girls are ready for a much needed break but we are exciting to keep the momentum for the All State Sugar Bowl,” Crews continued.
