BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s tennis team (3-6) dominated play all over the court Sunday as it defeated UNC Asheville (4-2) convincingly, 5-1, at George Ward Park.
“Our girls did a great job maintaining focus today despite rain delays,” head coach Mark Tija said. “I was pleased with our execution of the things we have been working on. Now, we turn our attention to getting ready for in-state rival Troy on Saturday.”
The Blazers sprinted out of the gates as they took down the Bulldogs on courts one and three to secure the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
Catherine Ragon and McKenna Root gave UAB an edge as the tandem took down Christin Louw and Madeline Finley 6-1 on court three. Meanwhile, Pardis Kianoush and Elaine Simon blanked Ericka Rivero and Kylee Shipley on court one to seal the doubles point.
In singles action, Shipley bounced back from a doubles loss as she defeated Root, due to injury, on court four to tie the match at 1-all.
The Blazers were unfazed as they went on to claim four straight contests, on courts 2, 3, 6 and 5, to earn the 5-1 win.
On court two, Simon earned UAB’s second point of the day with a 6-2, 6-2 win. Ragon followed suit as she ruled Hunter Hall and court three, 6-0, 6-1. Sophie Dodds and Reghan Lynch earned redemption points with 6-4, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-0 wins on six and five.
