TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The UAB softball team fell in its final game of pool play to No. 13/15 Florida State, but topped Hofstra 5-2 Saturday to advance to Sunday’s Unconquered Invitational championship game at JoAnne Graf Field.
Closing out pool play, No. 13/15 (11-3) Florida State topped the Blazers in five innings 10-0. With a 1-2 record, the Blazers won the runs-allowed tiebreaker against Hofstra to claim the two seed heading into tournament action.
Powered behind the Blazers’ slugging, UAB (5-10) defeated Hofstra(7-7) 5-2 to move on Sunday’s championship game against the host Seminoles. Sunday’s first pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. CT.
“Cara Goodwin pitched a quality game against a good hitting opponent,” head coach Marla Townsend said. “I’m very pleased with the way she kept the ball at the edge of the plate. Offensively, we had some really good, quality at-bats from the top of the lineup to the bottom and took advantage of some walks.”
Junior JoJo Fallen continued her hot streak at the plate with a 3-for-6 day scoring one run. Senior Ashley Johnson went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs.
Senior Caitlin Attfield recorded a 2-for-5 night while reaching base four times with two stolen bases. The shortstop’s defense highlighted Saturday as the senior recorded two putouts and four assists.
“Atty showed her range and made some phenomenal plays at short today,” Townsend added. “Our defense had an outstanding night and made some really tough plays.
“We needed this game. This game is getting us closer to where we want to be. We are going to enjoy it tonight and bring everything we’ve got tomorrow for the championship game.”
Game One | No. 13/15 Florida State (L, 10-0)
After the Blazers left one runner stranded, Florida State jumped out to an early lead, 1-0, in the bottom of the first with back-to-back hits to lead off the Seminole half of the inning.
Freshman Lizzie Ryan robbed Florida State of two hard hits to center field, but the Seminoles were able to tag up to score on a sacrifice fly to extend their lead to 2-0 after one.
