MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The UAB men’s tennis team earned a hard-fought 4-2 victory over host No. 62 Middle Tennessee in the MT Spring Showcase at Adams Tennis Complex.
The Blazers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to wins on courts two and three in doubles.
After the Blue Raiders claimed an early 1-0 advantage in doubles play with a win on court two, UAB bounced back as Eric Komati and Stepan Vancurik earned a 6-4 win on court three to knot the point at 1-all. In a challenging battle, Luiz Felipe Pinto and Mitchell Martell, a newly formed duo, earned a gutsy 7-6 win.
Middle Tennessee quickly tied the game at one with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Oliver Poysti on court three.
Christian Coetzee gave the Blazers back the lead, 2-1, with a 6-3, 6-3 win on court four over Ayed Zatar Cordero.
The Blue Raiders refused to go down easily as Gian Issa claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win on court six over Kenton Parton to tie the match at 2-all.
Vancurik responded for the Blazers on court five with a two-set 6-1, 7-5 win over Luis Morillo Diaz.
It came down to the top seeds as Martell and Dima Zyhmantovich fought tirelessly to edge the other; but Martell earned a clutch three-set victory, his third win in the past four matches, to clinch a 4-2 victory.
UAB returns to the courts tomorrow to face No. 66 Georgia State at 10 a.m.
