UAB Softball Falls to FIU in Series Finale

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team inched within three runs, but (RV) Florida International plated 11 runs off 14 hits and two Blazer errors to top UAB, 11-3, in Sunday’s series finale.
The Blazers earned their fourth conference series victory, taking the series over FIU, 2-1.
FIU (23-23, 8-10) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning as the Panthers plated four runs off five hits and one UAB error, highlighted by A.J. Belans’ two-RBI home run.
UAB (19-24, 9-6) battled back in the bottom of the second inning as Mary Warren drew a leadoff walk to extend her reached-base streak to 19 consecutive games. Senior Kelly Britt singled through the left single to advance pinch runner Lizzie Ryan to third.
Ryan scored on a squeeze play as freshman Hannah Lee laid down a perfect bunt in front of the plate to cut the Panthers’ lead to 4-1.
FIU added two unearned runs on a UAB fielding error in the top of the third to push its lead up to 6-1.
Junior Danii Fernandez and senior Caitlin Attfield knocked back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the fifth for the Blazers. Junior JoJo Fallen picked up her 20th RBI of the season with a single to left field to score pinch runner Katelyn Prater from second.
Warren recorded a two-out single to left field to score Attfield and bring the Blazers within three, 6-3.
FIU added two runs off a Stephanie Texeira home run in the top of the sixth before plating three more runs off three hits in the top of the seventh to top UAB and avoid the sweep, 11-3.
Three Blazers recorded multiple hits in Sunday’s contest as UAB knocked 11 on the afternoon. The Blazer defense tied a season high as UAB turned three double plays against the Panthers.
Junior Madison Hir was tagged with the loss as she gave up four runs off four hits and three walks in 1.0 inning. The West Palm Beach, Florida, native fell to 6-8 on the season. Sophomore Megan Smith pitched 6.0 innings of relief allowing seven runs off 10 hits and two walks.
UAB returns to action next weekend as the Blazers travel to UTEP in a battle for first place in the Conference USA Western Division. The series begins Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. CT.
