MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The UAB women’s tennis team suffered a 4-3 setback Friday morning to the University of Memphis from the Racquet Club of Memphis.
Memphis gained the early advantage in doubles play when Hanna Sohn and Josephine Cao defeated Hana Sisirak and Reghan Lynch 6-2 at the No. 2 position. Gabrielle Paul and Marta Morga clinched the point for the Tigers following a 6-3 victory over Sophie Dodds and McKenna Root at No. 3.
Morga continued her winning ways in singles action and gave Memphis 2-0 lead in the process after she turned in a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Sisirak at No. 4. Freshman Marlene Herrmann scored UAB’s first point and cut the deficit in half with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 win over Sohn at No. 2.
Katherine Cao regained a two-point lead for Memphis when she downed Taylor Factor 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5, but Lynch kept UAB alive and scored a point at No. 3 with a 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 victory over Paul.
Senior Pardis Kianoush pulled the Blazers even after she bested Anki Wind 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 at No. 1. Josephine Cao captured the deciding point at No. 6 and secured the win for Memphis after beating Natalie Voss 6-1, 6-1.
“We lost a tough one today, but I am very proud of the character and poise we showed,” UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. “We are starting to handle adversity better as a team. Pardis recorded her third top 100 win today and hopefully she will be in the rankings soon because she deserves it.”
UAB wraps up its four-match road trip Sunday in Starkville, Miss., when the Blazers face Mississippi State from the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
