BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team nabbed its first conference win of the season when freshman Destini England hit a walk off single up the middle to score Lizzie Ryan.
The Blazers (7-13, 1-0) tallied six hits in the first game of the series against Southern Miss. Analyse Petree and England both had multi-hit games while Rachel Dunsford and Molli Garcia each contributed with one.
The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh inning. Petree singled through the left side to lead the inning off and Mary Warren drew a no-out walk to put runners on first and second.
Garcia was next to bat and laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third before England singled up the middle to clinch the 1-0 victory over the Golden Eagles.
Southern Miss (11-9, 0-1) recorded four hits on the day and couldn't push any runs across the plate in the first game of the series against UAB.
Claire Blount (2-4) captured the win in the circle for the Blazers. She tossed a complete game and gave up four hits in the shutout. The freshman lefty recorded seven strikeouts and faced 33 batters in the victory.
Jillian Johnson (4-2) suffered the loss for the Golden Eagles. She gave up one run on six hits and faced 28 batters.
Due to inclement weather conditions, the two teams will play in a doubleheader starting at noon on Sunday.
